Digital and technical director

I joined Flag in October 2000 as a web developer, and my remit grew significantly over my time there. As Flag's digital and technical director, I had a broad range of responsibilities in three main areas.

Digital and UX

In my time at Flag, I was privileged to work on digital projects for a wide variety of clients, including large brands such as Amazon, McDonald's, Ford Motor Company, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, L'Oréal, Vodafone, PwC, 3M, Nestlé, Facebook, Tiffany and Cargill.

My responsibilities on the digital side included:

  • Leading the digital team, with overall responsibility for all of our digital output.
  • Establishing tools, processes and workflows for digital and UX design and development.
  • Providing strategic consultancy and guidance on all aspects of user experience to clients and internal project teams.
  • Understanding project context, inputs and influences and determining a good strategic solution that meets user needs and business objectives.
  • Gathering requirements, project scoping, specification, costs and scheduling.
  • Contributing to pitches and proposals.
  • Hands-on UX design deliverables that ensure effective and compelling experiences for users.
  • Production of detailed design specifications for developer handoff.
  • Liasing with clients' technical teams or providers, and with Flag's subcontractors and technical partners.
  • Ensuring that all of the digital work that we produce is of the highest quality, including compliance with accessibility standards.
  • Delivery of internal and external learning/training sessions.

...my contribution to the Amazon Sustainability website; a reinvention of their previous website that solidified their brand and provided the strategic presentational flexibility to deliver a variety of different types of content and messaging.

Business and management

As a senior member of the Flag team, I had a significant part to play in the strategic running of the business.

My business and management responsibilties included:

  • Senior leadership team, helping to shape business strategy and reporting directly to the board on digital and IT/cybersecurity matters.
  • Management team representing the operational aspects of digital project delivery.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to meet the evolving needs of the business.
  • The evaluation and rollout of business tools, systems, policies and processes.
  • Investor in the business.

IT and cybersecurity

In order for the business to run efficiently and effectively, it's critical to provide a robust and responsive IT function. And for large brands to work with Flag, we have to be serious about our cybersecurity posture and processes.

My IT and cybersecurity responsibilities included:

  • Conception and delivery of Flag's IT and cybersecurity strategy, policies and operations.
  • Forecasting and managing Flag's annual IT and cybersecurity budget.
  • Procurement and provision of hardware and software.
  • Management of third-party technical partners and providers in different geographies.
  • Delivery of technical support to ~100 employees in the UK, USA and Europe.
  • Planning and delivery of ad-hoc IT and cybersecurity projects to improve our security posture and mitigate risk.

...my final dissertation project, Get Up and Go: Exploring how ambient persuasive technology can influence sedentary behaviour (2018), which employed a participatory, user-centred design process, informed by medical research and theoretical models of behaviour change, to design, implement, deploy and evaluate a novel ambient persuasive technology intervention aimed at encouraging desk-based workers to break up prolonged bouts of sitting.
